A house Is Not A Home

"A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 song recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick. Written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the song was a modest hit in the U.S. for Warwick, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Two weeks earlier, a competing version by Brook Benton had debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at number seventy-five. The Brook Benton version of the tune was used as the theme for the film of the same name.

Warwick's version of "A House Is Not a Home" fared better in Canada, where it was a top 40 hit, peaking at #37. The song made the R&B top 10 in Cashbox by both Warwick and Benton, with neither artist specified as best seller.

The song inspired the joking title of Arthur Lee's song "A House Is Not a Motel" from the Love LP Forever Changes.

Rachel Elizabeth
Rachel Elizabeth Dare is a fictional character in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Unlike other prominent members of the series, neither of her parents is a god; instead, they both are mortal. Despite this, Rachel has the ability to see through Mist, a substance which renders most mortals unaware of the existence of the Olympians as well as the immortal world’s interactions with humanity’s.

She possesses a power of extraordinary foresight uncommon in even her demigod counterparts. Her clairvoyant abilities and ultimately her own self-awareness of fate lead her to allow the spirit of the Oracle of Delphi to pass into her from the cursed remains of the previous oracle, thus becoming the next Oracle of Delphi, Oracle of the Gods as well as the resident oracle at Camp Half-Blood. By doing such, she sacrifices her romance with Percy, as the Oracle must sever all romantic connections in her oath to become the Oracle.

Smallest Man In the World
It is really sad to hear the news of demise of the world’s smallest man. The former Guinness World record holder for being the shortest man in the world China’s Ping Ping died last month in Rome. The cause of his death is said to be his pulmonary failure.

Ping Ping was born in Mongolia in July 1988. He was only 74.61 centimeters tall. His size remained short due to a disease known as osteogenesis imperfect. This disease proved for him in his life time a blessing in disguise for him. He earned world wide fame on account of his short stature. Nevertheless, the poor young man could not enjoy international fame for much long. His age at the time of his death was 21 only. He was in Italy for the recording of a show, during the recording he suddenly had the problem of chest pain which resulted in his death.

His death is no doubt a great grief to the entire Chinese nation. After his death the question arises whether there is another smallest man in the world who could get the Guinness world record of smallest man in the world.

Born in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu Khagendra Thapa Magar is probably going to be the next Guinness world record holder of smallest man in the world. The eighteen years old teen is just 22 inches tall who likes to ply with pebbles. The youth has weight of 10 pounds only. He expects to gain the title on his next birthday.

Michaels in Critical Condition With Hemorrhage

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bret Michaels is in critical condition suffering from a brain hemorrhage, his publicist said Friday. Joann Mignano confirmed a report on People magazine's website Friday that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

Mignano said tests are being conducted and that no further information was available.

The 47-year-old reality TV star had an emergency appendectomy last week after complaining of stomach pains. He said on his website that though the surgery ''has taken its toll,'' doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Michaels starred on the VH1 dating show ''Rock of Love'' and is a contestant on Donald Trump's NBC reality show, ''The Celebrity Apprentice.''

Trump said in a statement Friday that he was ''deeply saddened'' to hear of Michaels' condition.

''He's a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine,'' Trump said.

Ralph SnodSmith Dies At 70

Ralph Snodsmith, a specialist in gardening who tilled the mediums of radio, television and publishing to help homeowners in New York and across the country to care for their plants and to help them to thrive, died Saturday in Fredericksburg, Va. He was 70.

He died from complications of a broken hip, said Mary Snodsmith, his wife of 47 years. "He was just a gentle man. He cared about people. And he liked people," she said.

Joe Bartlett, the news director of WOR-AM where her husband was host of "Garden Hotline," called Ralph Snodsmith "the foremost authority on gardening."

"He's helped millions of people with their gardening questions, whether it's their indoor plants, gardens or trees," he said.

Snodsmith for eight years served as a gardening expert on "Good Morning America," wrote several popular books on gardening, including "The Tri-State Gardener's Guide" and "Fundamentals of Gardening," and lectured at the New York Botanical Garden.

With degrees in floriculture and ornamental horticulture, he approached his subject with a scientist's tenor and a gardener's love for the earthiness of the art.

"Planting the right plant in the right environment means more than just knowing the amount of sun or shade it will receive," he writes in "New York Gardener's Guide." ''Consider exposure to cold and wind."

Iceland Volcano: WHO issues health waring – UK undermines it.

Iceland Volcano
Scottish health authorities as well as WHO (World Health Organisation) has issued health warnings. Saying that the ash falling to the ground in the northern Britain could cause serious respiratory and lung problems. Primarily, people suffering from asthma are more likely to be at risk. So WHO is trying very hard to collect information and the kinds of health risk the ash cloud might pose.

However, the British health officials have underplaying the health hazard, saying that only a “small faction of Iceland volcanic plume” would be falling on the ground level. Starting this evening in Scotland and then it will move over to the south of UK according to the Health Protection Scotland. Though the concentration of the particles reaching the ground is likely to be very low and shouldn’t cause any kind of serious harm, still people are asked to stay indoors.

People outside might experience eyes getting itchy and irritation, with runny nose and sore throat and dry cough. Also if they smell sulphur, rotten eggs they should get indoors. Already due to the smoke and ash clouds along with Britain seven other European countries have closed their airspace. According to the weather experts, the ash cloud is expected to move both Eastwards into Russia and Southwards over Europe at a speed of a slow moving car.

National Day Of Silence Makes Its Presence Known

The National Day of Silence is scheduled for many public schools in the United States tomorrow, April 16. This is sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network or “GLSEN”.

Although there is no proven social benefit from the event, it is allowed in public schools and is therefore supported with tax dollars of those in the United States. The recent Fox news piece condemning the GLSEN event was counter-attacked by change.org.  All this is occurring even before the GLSEN date arrives tomorrow.

Many parents take their children out of school on this date to protect them from the violence that historically occurs. The pressing issue of the silence is purportedly to support those who are homosexual by being silent for them against their supposed persecutors. Even if a person is not a homosexual, they could therefore support the homosexual lifestyle just by not talking on April 16.

No proof has ever been given for the claim that being a homosexual is similar to being of another race. It has been shown repeatedly that a homosexual can change their sexual inclination. It is quite the opposite event for the color of the skin.

The National Day of Silence is meant to prevent more violence. Here is hoping this happens on both sides of the issue.

Google Android Tablet: A Reality Check

It's fun to imagine what a Google Android tablet could do, but don't let some of the headlines out there fool you: From what we know so far, there's no reason to believe a Google-made Android tablet is an "imminent" or even a certain thing.

Read back over what the info provided by The New York Times actually states: Google is "exploring the idea" of building a tablet device. It is "experimenting" with possibilities. Despite some bloggers' tendencies to fill in the blanks with big words, there's no indication that this is a done deal, let alone something that's likely to occur at any moment.

We do know, however, that a slew of new tablets is on the way for 2010, and many of them are expected to be powered by Android. So whether or not Google ends up building its own tablet, numerous new options will soon be headed our way. The iPad may have been the first serious contender, but it won't be the only one for long.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski, His Wife and 94 Others Killed In Plane Crash in Russia

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country’s highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 96, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland’s political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Although initial signs pointed to an accident with no indication of foul play, the death of a Polish president and much of the Polish state and defense establishment in Russia en route to commemorating one of the saddest events in Poland’s long, complicated history with Russia, was laden with tragic irony.

Reflecting the grave sensibilities of the crash to relations between the two countries, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin personally assumed charge of the investigation. He was due in Smolensk later Saturday, where he would meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was flying in from Warsaw.

The Polish presidential plane was headed for a military airport, North Smolensk, located near an aviation plant.

Andrei Yevseyenkov, spokesman for the Smolensk regional government, said Russian dispatchers asked the crew to land in either Minsk, the capital of neighboring Belarus, or in Moscow because of the fog.

“But the crew made an independent decision to land in Smolensk,” Yevseyenkov said in televised remarks.

No one answered the phone at the airport throughout the afternoon Saturday.

Russia’s Emergency Ministry said there were 96 dead, 88 of whom were part of a Polish state delegation. Poland’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up for the roughly 1 1/2-hour flight from Warsaw’s main airport.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he had ordered a two-minute silence at noon (1000GMT) Sunday.

“The contemporary world has not seen such a tragedy,” he said, offering his “deepest sympathy” to the president’s family.

Tusk noted that condolences were pouring in from around the world and noted that “the first came from (Russian) Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev.”

Also among the victims was Anna Walentynowicz, whose firing in August 1980 from the Lenin Shipyards in Gdansk sparked a workers’ strike that spurred the eventual creation of the Solidarity freedom movement. She went on to be a prominent member.

The deaths were not expected to directly affect the functioning of Polish government: Poland’s president is commander in chief of its armed forces but the position’s domestic duties are chiefly symbolic. The prime minister and other top government ministers were not aboard the plane.

Poland has long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country’s leaders but said they lacked the funds. The presidential Tu-154 had been overhauled in December in Russia, officials said.

Poland’s parliament speaker, the acting president, declared a week of national mourning.

The plane tilted to the left before crashing, eyewitness Slawomir Sliwinski told Rossiya-24. He said there were two loud explosions when the aircraft hit the ground.

State news channel Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the debris.

“The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart,” regional governor Sergei Anufriev said on Rossiya-24. “Nobody has survived the disaster.”

According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.

The presidential plane was fully overhauled in December, the general director of the Aviakor aviation maintenance plant in Samara, Russia told Rossiya-24. The plant repaired the plane’s three engines, retrofitted electronic and navigation equipment and updated the interior, Alexei Gusev said. He said there could be no doubts that the plane was flightworthy.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev both called Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to express their condolences and they promised to work closely with Poland in investigating the crash.

“On this difficult day the people of Russia stand with the Polish people,” Medvedev told Tusk, the Kremlin press service said.

Putin, who has been put in charge of the commission investigating the crash, told Tusk that he would keep him fully briefed, his spokesman said.

Polish-Russian relations had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre of some 22,000 Polish officers.

Russia never has formally apologized for the murders but Putin’s decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation. Rossiya-24 showed hundreds of people around the Katyn monument, many holding Polish flags, some weeping.

In Warsaw, Tusk called an extraordinary meeting of his Cabinet and the national flag was lowered to half-staff at the presidential palace, where people gathered to lay flowers and light candles.

Black ribbons appeared in some windows in the Polish capital.

Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year’s presidential vote.

The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland’s opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Kaczynski’s wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.

Kaczynski had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk’s governing Civic Platform party.

Poland was due to hold elections in the fall, though no date had been set.

However, the constitution says the parliament speaker, who takes on the duties of president, must announce early elections within 14 days of the president’s death.

The vote must be held within another 60 days. This means Poland will be holding early presidential elections before June 20.

In the village of Gorzno, in northern Poland, the streets were largely empty as people stayed home to watch television.

“It is very symbolic that they were flying to pay homage to so many murdered Poles,” said resident Waleria Gess, 73.

“I worry because so many clever and decent people were killed,” said high school student Pawel Kwas, 17. “I am afraid we may have problems in the future to find equally talented politicians.”

Klaus Bachmann, a professor of politics at Wroclaw University, said the president “wasn’t very popular and it was quite obvious that he would lose the upcoming elections.”

“The open question is what will Kaczynski’s party and his brother do; he might decide to run for president himself, he might also consider to withdraw from politics at all because he had a very very close link to his brother and I can’t imagine how much shocked he must be.”

Poland, a nation of 38 million people, is by far the largest of the 10 formerly communist countries that have joined the European Union in recent years.

Last year, Poland was the only EU nation to avoid recession and posted economic growth of 1.7 percent.

It has become a firm U.S. ally in the region since the fall of communism — a stance that crosses party lines.

The country sent troops to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and recently boosted its contingent in Afghanistan to some 2,600 soldiers.

U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year. That was a Polish condition for a 2008 deal — backed by both Kaczynski and Tusk — to host long-range missile defense interceptors.

The deal, which was struck by the Bush administration, angered Russia and was later reconfigured under President Barack Obama’s administration.

Under the Obama plan, Poland would host a different type of missile defense interceptors as part of a more mobile system and at a later date, probably not until 2018.

Kaczynski is the first serving Polish leader to die since exiled World War II-era leader Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.

iPhone 4G

The iPhone 4G release date is looking like it is set for Thursday April 8th.
Apple is ready for their big day on Thursday, once again gaining the world’s attention in large scale and causing the web to buzz with excitement.

On Thursday April 8, Apple will be holding an iPhone OS 4 event in San Francisco where it is anticipated that we’ll hear about the new iPhone 4G.

There is very little known about what the new iPhone 4G may look like, and the tech specs associated with it. But it is clear that a 4G device would be faster, sleeker, and more efficient than what we currently have in the iPhone 3G.

Also, AT&T is currently the only carrier with rights to the iPhone, but companies such as Verizon and Sprint are looking to get in on the iPhone action.

Apple appears ready and willing to expand the iPhone carrier base, and has already announced they are currently working on an iPhone that is fully compatible with other carrier networks such as Verizon.

The didgeridoo (also known as a didjeridu or didge) is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia at least 1,500 years ago and is still in widespread usage today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or “drone pipe”. Musicologists classify it as an aerophone. The instrument is traditionally made from Eucalyptus trees which have had their interiors hollowed out by termites or died of other causes.

There are no reliable sources stating the didgeridoo’s exact age. Archaeological studies of rock art in Northern Australia suggest that the Aboriginal people of the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory have been using the didgeridoo for at least 1,500 years, based on the dating of paintings on cave walls and shelters from this period. Kennedy Space Center showcases wildlife

It is the night before our morning launch and the Corsair team is preparing for an all-nighter of shuttle and astronaut observation. As this blog is being composed the shuttle’s external hydrogen tank is being filled in preparation for the vessel’s 13-day interstellar mission.

During our time here we’ve been able to catch glimpses of the diverse habitat that is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which is a part of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The 140,000-acre refuge was established in 1963 and is home for 1,500 species of plants and animals. According to the Kennedy Space Center website, the federally protected environment is made up of coastal dunes, saltwater estuaries and marshes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks. Canals along the sides of NASA Parkway were loaded with alligators, great white herons, turtles and other aquatic life.
The result of nearly half a century of wild growth intermingled with mankind’s space-bound contraptions creates an interesting contrast. If only other segments of our highly-developed society could co-exist with nature in such a seemingly harmonious manner.
