Lena Horne
The singer and actress Lena Horne died today in a New York hospital at age 92.

Born in 1917, Horne started she’s professional career in the thirties working as a showgirl at The Cotton Club in New York’s Harlem neighborhood, becoming one of the leading black artists employed by an orchestra.

Gradually Lena Horne rose through the ranks of the music, until she got a contract with the Metro Goldwyn Mayer film company, becoming the first African American artist who was on the payroll of a major studio.

Lena’s powerful voice and striking beauty left many people speechless, although her skin color always was a condition for Lena Horne, and she had to fight social rejection on several occasions.
