Amare Stoudemire

Sponsored Links
Amare StoudemireAmare Stoudemire and Derrick Rose deserve your MVP consideration as they have been carving up the competition recently and have risen to the top of our NBA MVP rankings for week seven. Dirk Nowitzki has the Mavericks operating in high gear and Deron Williams continues to enhance his MVP credentials with each passing game. Also, as Pau Gasol has fallen off a bit Kobe Bryant makes his way on my list for the first time this year as he has played superbly during Gasol’s struggles and Kevin Garnett re-enters the race behind his spectacular defensive play.

No LeBron James this week, folks. Dwyane Wade has been carrying the Heat equally during their scintillating nine-game run so James is on the outside looking in.

Bama Belles premieresBama Belles premieres tonight on TLC.  The new reality series follows a group of Alabama women as they juggle their careers, home lives and relationships with one another.  The series looks like Real Housewives with a down home spin.

Bama Belles follows the five women in Dothan, Alabama, as they deal with everything from packed work schedules, to packing a lunch. They get down and dirty in the south hunting, fishing, four wheeling and tailgating at stock car races.  The Bama Belles include:

Amie Pollard – a 39 year old mother, radio personality and real estate developer who is brash and unapologetic. She is everyone’s best friend, that is, until you cross her. She and her family are completely self made.

Melissa McLaney – a 35 year old mother, ex beauty queen and business owner who is always striving to be perfect. She gave up her well paid job to set up a family business with her husband, which they are now struggling to keep afloat.

Jana Roberts – a 28 year old preacher’s daughter and beautician. She and her husband, a former Met’s pitcher, are on an emotional rollercoaster as they go through IVF.

Val Tignini – a 26 year old internet entrepreneur who is a fish out of water in the deep south. After visiting her friend Amie while on a media tour for her website, she decides to move from New York to Dothan.

Dakota Redding - a 24 year old physical therapist and member of the army reserve. She is a tobacco chewing cowgirl who is about to enlist full time in the military.

Since the Real Housewives of New Jersey is one of my fave shows ever, I’m going to check out Bama Belles, how about you?  You can read more about the new series on the TLC website.

Do you Remember: Rosa Parks ?

Sponsored Links
Rosa ParksTwo weeks ago today I was in Montgomery, Alabama. Montgomery is called the Capital City of the American South, home to the short-lived Confederate presidency of Jefferson Davis to birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. Its motto: Change happens here.

The sky was a typical Alabama bright blue, the weather sunny and crisp for a late November day. I drove downtown and there it was. A small commemorative sign dedicated to mark the spot where Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the city bus. This was not far from the Montgomery Biscuits Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Spa at the Convention Center. Change happens here.

Fifty-five years ago today, Mrs. Parks, the secretary of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, seared her legacy. She was not the first to refuse to take the designated "coloreds only" seat in the back. Many others had done so by December 1, 1955. Maybe it was her quiet resolve or the police mug shot of the middle-aged seamstress that led to a 381-day Montgomery bus boycott and a civil rights movement that found its spark.

Parks boarded a bus being driven by James Fred Blake. She had a long history with Blake. In 1943, he had ordered her off his bus for taking her seat from the front. Blacks were supposed to pay the driver from the front but then step out and board the bus from the back. That night Rosa Parks walked home in the rain after Blake drove off. Parks later said that she generally avoided Blake whenever she could. But on that December night in 1955, Parks had refused to move from the middle section of the bus and Blake called the police for her arrest. Blake explained: "I wasn't trying to do anything to that Parks woman except do my job. She was in violation of the city codes, so what was I supposed to do? That damn bus was full and she wouldn't move back. I had my orders." Blake remained a driver for the Montgomery city bus lines until 1974.

The Montgomery of today is a virtual shrine to her memory. There is Rosa L. Parks Avenue and Rosa Parks Place, a Rosa Parks branch of the Montgomery Library, the Rosa L. Parks city park, the Rosa Parks Quick Stop convenience store, Rosa Parks Place apartments and the Rosa L. Parks Avenue Church of God. Troy University sponsors the Rosa Parks Library and Museum. Ironically, Rosa Parks the person left Montgomery, Alabama for Detroit, Michigan just two years after her history-making turn in that city bus. Her celebrity had led to threats. But the Rosa Parks legacy of conscientious objection continues.

Rosa Parks died in 2005 at the age of 92. She outlived Martin Luther King, Jr. by thirty-seven years. King was a 26-year-old minister at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery when the 42-year-old seamstress holding a bag of groceries refused to give up her seat to a white male passenger on the Cleveland Avenue bus line. Dr. King would become the spokesperson for the Bus Boycott and educate the people in the methods of nonviolent civil disobedience.

This "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, forty miles east of Montgomery, in a family whose heritage was African-American, Cherokee-Creek, and Scots-Irish. Her American Indian heritage is the same as the Snow family, though I haven't quite traced all the documented details.

Many will celebrate the memory of Rosa Parks today. I think Google got it right with the image of children pouring out of a bus fifty-five years after Rosa Parks refused to move. It is idealistic, of course, but inspiring. The Civil Rights Movement continues to remind us of what one individual can do to create change. It happens here.

Falling Sand Game

Sponsored Links
Most online games are incredibly easy to work out as they’re based on things you’ve already played. There’s beat ‘em ups, shoot ‘em ups, sports games, puzzle games… and the list goes on and on.

However, sometimes, you’ll find an online game that’s absolutely mystifying. A type of game that just doesn’t exist anywhere else because it’s so peculiar. And here we have Falling Sand Game. An incredibly boring name, sure. Rubbish graphics too? Yep.

It’s hard to pinpoint why, but this thing is astonishingly addictive. You click on things and set fire to environments you have just created while a big spiky ball charges around. You’ll hopelessly poke at it for 2 minutes before realising that you’re already hooked. Weird.

Keith Olbermann Updated: Suspended From MSNBC for Campaign Donations

Sponsored Links
Keith OlbermannKeith Olbermann, the pre-eminent liberal voice on American television, was suspended Friday after his employer, MSNBC, discovered that he made campaign contributions to three Democrats last month.

The indefinite suspension was a stark display of the clash between objectivity and opinion in television journalism. While Mr. Olbermann is anchor of what is essentially the “Democratic Nightly News,” the decision affirmed that he was being held to the same standards as other employees of MSNBC and its parent, NBC News, both of which answer to NBC Universal. Most journalistic outfits discourage or outright prohibit campaign contributions by employees.

Many prominent liberals and conservatives immediately called on MSNBC to reinstate Mr. Olbermann, who is usually outspoken but who had no comment on his suspension Friday. His agent did not respond to a request for comment.

As of Friday evening, tens of thousands of people had signed a petition titled “Put Olbermann Back On The Air NOW!” that was circulated by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.

Mr. Olbermann’s contributions came to light in an article by Politico Friday morning. Mr. Olbermann acknowledged in a statement that last month he donated $2,400 to the campaigns of Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and Attorney General Jack Conway of Kentucky, who lost his Senate race to Rand Paul.

Mr. Olbermann also said, “I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level.”

Several hours later, the president of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, said in a statement, “I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.”

Mr. Griffin consulted with both Steve Capus, the president of NBC News, and Jeff Zucker, the chief executive of NBC Universal before making the decision to suspend Mr. Olbermann.

No one at NBC News, MSNBC’s parent, would speculate about what this might mean for Mr. Olbermann’s future, though two NBC executives privately suggested this was not a step toward firing him.

One executive said the network decided it was imperative to take this kind of strong action as a way of underscoring that MSNBC, while featuring prime-time shows that overtly support Democratic policy, remains a channel that adheres to fundamental journalistic values.

An executive with another television news organization, who asked not to be identified in offering analysis of competitors, said NBC may even see the disciplining of Mr. Olbermann as an opportunity to distinguish itself from Fox News, which has been increasingly criticized for taking Republican positions.

Fox’s parent company, News Corporation, came under fire from Mr. Olbermann and others for donating $1.25 million to Republicans earlier this year.

Separately, one of the top hosts on Fox, Sean Hannity, contributed to two Republican Congressional candidates earlier this year. Mr. Hannity made a $2,400 contribution to a Republican congressional candidate, John Gomez, a long-time friend of his, and a $5,000 contribution to the political action committee of Representative Michele Bachmann, Republican of Minnesota.

Mr. Olbermann’s program, “Countdown,” is the most popular hour on MSNBC, with about 1.1 million viewers a night. Years ago Mr. Olbermann gave voice to dissenting views about the Iraq war and about Bush administration policies when few others on television would, and more recently he helped advance the Obama administration’s push for a health care overhaul. Mr. Griffin has called the seven-year-old “Countdown” the tent-pole of MSNBC, which has rebuilt itself as a home for liberal-minded Americans. It recently adopted a new slogan, “Lean Forward,” which winks at its progressive bent.

Mr. Olbermann has long been a volatile figure inside MSNBC. He has fought repeatedly in the past with Mr. Griffin and other managers over editorial decisions and has been harshly critical of his former bosses.

There was some head-scratching about MSNBC’s decision, since it is well known that Mr. Olbermann is a liberal newsman. There were defenders, including a writer for the libertarian magazine Reason, Michael C. Moynihan, who wondered why MSNBC had a “one-size-fits-all policy” about contributions.

Mr. Moynihan asked, “Isn’t it unfair to hold Olbermann, who is one of the most partisan people on television (if not of Earth), to the same standards as, say, Brian Williams? Countdown exists to promote Democratic candidates and liberal policies, which is just fine by me. So why shouldn’t Olbermann, as a private citizen, be allowed to donate money to those candidates he plumps for on television?”

Many MSNBC employees were stunned by the suspension. Bloggers
seized on the fact that another MSNBC host, Joe Scarborough, had not
been reprimanded when he made a contribution to a Republican in 2006
(although an NBC spokesman said he had asked for permission).

Most television news organizations have rules about journalists contributing to political campaigns, but some make distinctions between their anchors and reporters and those offering opinions. For example, in the aftermath of the Olbermann suspension, CNN said its policy “prohibits full-time employees from making contributions to political parties or candidates,” but a CNN executive acknowledged that these rules did not cover part-time employees or political contributors.

News Corporation policy states that Fox employees should not make donations in the company’s name but that “this is not intended to discourage employees from making personal contributions to candidates of the political parties of their choice.”

MSNBC’s policy, as published by msnbc.com in 2007, states that “anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest. Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions. You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the President of NBC News or his designee.”

There was no request for an exception from Mr. Olbermann in this case, according to NBC News executives.

One of the NBC executives agreed with the point, suggested by senior executives at other television news divisions, that Mr. Olbermann’s transgression in making the donation was compounded by the fact that he had anchored the election coverage on MSNBC, and had not just worked as a commentator on the results.

The suspension comes at a particularly tricky time for MSNBC. NBC Universal is in the midst of a change of ownership, with its potential new owner, Comcast, seeking final federal approval for the sale. It hopes to conclude the deal by the end of the year.

Bernie Sanders, the independent Congressman from Vermont, called Mr. Olbermann’s suspension “outrageous” in a statement, adding, “This is a real threat to political discourse in America and will have a chilling impact on every commentator for MSNBC.”

MSNBC initially said that Chris Hayes, the Washington editor of The Nation magazine and an MSNBC contributor, would fill in for Mr. Olbermann. But Mr. Hayes said on Twitter that he did not feel comfortable doing so under the circumstances, and the channel ended up having a straightforward news anchor, Thomas Roberts, fill in on Friday night.

Did you know : Fernando Valenzuela Hot News

Fernando Valenzuela:ESPN is 30 to 30 documentary series moves right along with Fernando Nation, “directed by Cruz Angeles, was born in Mexico and raised in South Central Los Angeles who now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Although it is not only a portrait of the rapid growth Fernando Valenzuela, the top in 1981, is perhaps the first document of the social conditions of Latin American community during this time.

Angeles first discusses the plight of the residents of Chavez Ravine to the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. “You can not talk about the Fernando-Mania, not to mention Chavez Ravine,” said Angeles. In an interview with Dolores Huerta, vice president emeritus United Farm Workers of America, J. Gerardo Lopez La opinions and other public figures, Angeles, delves into the painful Latin community in Los Angeles felt when thinking about the Dodgers and the Dodgers as a matter of fact only for white fans.

With Walter O’Malley knowing the potential money to be made of the Latin American community, he always wanted to find “Mexican Sandy Koufax.” Unfortunately, he would never see one in my life, but thanks to scout Mike Brito, they finally got one in Fernando Valenzuela.

And, unfortunately, at this point, where the documentary leaves tracks.

Yes, it’s great to get a taste of Valenzuela 8-0 start in 1981 thanks to a longtime fan Paul Haddad identifies the radio this year. But it was obvious that the 50-minute limit really a documentary of injustice.

All events prior to 1981 was very well laid out allows the viewer to easily digest the scene. But then the movie starts to go at breakneck speed, making it difficult for baseball fans simply enjoy the feat Valenzuela did. And then, perhaps the biggest, most egregious sin of all was done.

For the only non-Valenzuela in a bitter 29 June 1990, instead of using a big challenge Vin Scully moment (“Give you a sombrero in the air”) call ESPN out of the game was used.

Angeles did regret what he had to cut Bobby Castillo Valenzuela teaching psycho. Of course, it was an omission Valenzuela reluctance to step onto the Dodger Stadium until 2003, when he was persuaded to join the Dodgers Spanish-language broadcasting.

Despite its faults and shortcomings, “Fernando of the nation” continues to look strong for everyone.

Diego Sanche UFC

Diego Sanche UFCMany MMA fans were writing off Diego Sanchez as he stepped into the cage against Paulo Thiago at UFC 121. It wasn't pretty in the first round as Thiago did much better work but Sanchez set such a hard pace that by the end of the round you could see Thiago fading.

In the second round Diego got the takedown and really dominated from top, landing a lot of punches and elbows and simply outworking Thiago. Suddenly the world was being reminded that Sanchez is the much more accomplished grappler. In the third Diego got the takedown, took the back and did damage from the position including locking in a nasty body triangle. Thiago gave up the mount, got pounded on more and then turned back over. It was complete domination by Diego in the round.

The judges scored the bout 30-26, 29-28 and 29-28 for Sanchez.

Prior to the fight Diego said win or lose he'd be dropping back down to 155 pounds but he looked so good tonight that we'll just have to see if he follows through.

Chandra Levy

Chandra Levy WASHINGTON – If a person is associated with the mysterious death of Washington intern Chandra Levy, who is not the man who will soon be tried on charges that he murdered. He is a former California congressman Gary Condit, whose career imploded after he was linked romantically to the woman and became the No. 1 suspect.

Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, is on trial on Monday for 2001 Levy’s killing. However, even a national consciousness about the case, which dominated news coverage until t*rror*sm September 11, 2001, attacks that represents an afterthought.

Although police do not believe Condit had nothing to do with Levy’s death, his presence will hang over the trial. Condit spokesman, Bert Fields, said Condit waiting to be called as a witness at trial Guandique, but has not been cited.

Campos said Condit will fully cooperate with the authorities. However, the former congressman, who is writing a book about his experience, would not comment on the trial until the end.

Bill Miller, a prosecution spokesman, declined to comment on the case and whether Condit will be called as a witness, citing a court order issued earlier this month.

Defense attorneys are also subject to the gag order. But when Guandique was charged in 2009 with the murder of Levy, criticized what they saw as a botched investigation. Guandique escaped scrutiny largely because of the frenzy around Condit. The former congressman has never admitted an affair, but said he was a friend of Levy, but the inmate had told relatives of the two had a romantic relationship.

“This research flawed, marked by the many mistakes and missteps of the Metropolitan Police Department and all federal agencies that have tried to resolve this case will not end with the simple issue of a warrant of arrest against Mr. Guandique,” told lawyers, Santha Sonenberg and Hawilo Mary.

In a pretrial hearing Thursday, Sonenberg said police were so desperate for a confession of Guandique to bolster their case that in 2004 and 2005, the police tried to establish a correspondence with false Guandique while in prison serving a sentence of 10 years, using the pseudonym “Mary Smith.” The ruse did not work.

“It’s going to the class clown, the kind of mischief, the lengths they have gone to pursue Mr. Guandique,” Sonenberg said.

The then U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor acknowledged the case had no DNA or physical evidence linking Guandique Levy. And Guandique never confessed to the police – in fact, passed a lie detector test denying involvement in Levy’s disappearance, but prosecutors now question the validity of that test.

But Taylor cited substantial circumstantial evidence, including confessions allegedly made numerous Guandique to other inmates. Levy and the body was found in a wooded section of Rock Creek Park City, where Guandique was convicted of assaulting two other young women in 2001.

In a pretrial hearing last month, U.S. Assistant Attorney Amanda Haines said Guandique has a “signature style confession.” She said that Levy had discussed killing many people, giving each person markedly different details.

If jurors believe these confessions will be key. The defense wants to present expert testimony of a university professor about the dangers of the accounts of prison informers. But prosecutors say the jurors should be able to judge the credibility of the witnesses themselves. Superior Court Judge Gerald I. Fisher says itwill not allow the great majority of the testimonies given by the teacher.

As for Condit, exactly what role he will play in court is unclear. Defense attorneys might be tempted to remind the jurors that the police suspect Condit for so long, said attorney George Jackson, a Chicago-based attorney with the law firm of Polsinelli Shughart and a former federal prosecutor.

Jackson said the defense will have to be careful because jurors feel discouraged if the lawyers are trying to make an innocent man as a scapegoat. And the government will surely be ready to deal with suggestions that Condit was involved. But because Condit is so closely linked to the case in the public eye, the defense has a margin of maneuver to approach the subject with subtlety.

“If it is possible to suggest that this man might have been involved, you put out there” to help create a reasonable doubt in the minds of a jury, said Jackson. “But it is a dangerous thing to do because I do not know if there will be a backlash.”

Terry Kennedy

Sponsored Links
Terry Kennedy Stories of triumph over adversity are always an inspiration and for Terry Kennedy it just keeps getting better and better.

The Long Beach skater, also known as “Compton Ass Terry” didn’t have the best start in life when aged just five years old his father left, and ten years later his mother died.

He grew up in Long Beach which he says was a hard thing to do as there are so many gangs, but the likeable African American always wanted better for himself and with his new TV show Being Terry Kennedy debuting last night it looks like he’s managed just that.

Kennedy has been a skate celebrity for a few years, the twenty-five-year old also featuring in Viva La Bam with Jackass’ Bam Margera and Snoop Dogg’s Drop it like it’s hot video.

His rise from gang life to celebrity has not been easy however and he was shot twice in June 2005, in the jaw and forearm while leaving a party in Long Beach.  He made a full recovery and has since, as always, kept on smiling.

In an interview with ESPN on the subject of his TV show Terry says, “I’m tapping on family, my skateboarding career, music and me being a young, up and coming mogul.”

And when asked why he felt Being Terry Kennedy will be a success where other skateboarding legends have failed he replied, “I’m going to be honest; my story can’t come across soft. Everything I’ve been through in life … that’s something I want to teach everybody in my city and inner cities around the country and in my African American culture, to not be scared of who you are. If I was scared of who I was as a person never have friends like Andrew Reynolds, I’d never be a skateboarder, nothing would’ve ever happened for me. That’s why I wanted to do the TV show, to show I come from the same situation or worse as many African Americans and I was able to prevail because I stayed true to what I believe in.”

So what are the details of this dispute? Let’s just say, according to Caitlin’s parents, Nickelodeon has screwed Caitlin out of “millions, perhaps tens of millions of dollars”. Yikes!

Caitlin’s lawyer, John Balestriere told the Daily News “I’ve never seen as convoluted and inscrutable contract as I’ve seen here.” Balestriere continued, “Defendants used Caitlin, unjustly enriching themselves of millions of dollars in profits from the series and branded products, which Caitlin performed and promoted.”

In a nutshell, Caitlin’s parents are saying that Nickelodeon has not forked up any money for hundreds of hours of recording sessions. In addition to that, Caitlin was given only $40 a day for travel and a mere $5,000 an episode. That’s nothing!

However Nickelodeon is saying Caitlyn’s claims are baseless. They released the following statement saying, “Unfortunately, Caitlin’s voice changed and she was no longer able to portray the Dora character, as happened with the actress who originated the role. Caitlin’s contract was extensively negotiated through her agent and in compliance with her union. She was well-compensated for her work and for personal appearances. We have enjoyed working with Caitlin on Dora the Explorer these past three years, and we did in fact offer her a contract for other work with us.”

Sounds pretty messy!

Todd Collins Knocked Out

Todd Collins
By Michael Tunison

It wasn't quite enough that Bears starter Jay Cutler was injured on Sunday night against the Giants with a concussion, but it appears that Chicago has lost veteran back-up Todd Collins as well. On the drive after the Giants took a 17-3 lead with about five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Collins was hit after a throw by Giants linebacker Michael Boley.

Collins head bounced off the turf on the hit - not much unlike Cutler's did - forcing Collins to leave the game with minutes left in the fourth quarter. Caleb Hanie relieved Collins and completed his first pass to Johnny Knox for 26 yards, but the Bears didn't get another first down, turning the ball over on downs on the next sequence.

Meet Corey Bohan, Audrina Patridge of each week. It seems as though Patridge rolls through guys like it tight bikini. So who is it Bohan character? If his name sounds familiar it’s because he is Audrina like Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson … man kept in the background in case things do not work with others. And while you may think that Justin Bobby was its output per person, when things got rough, Bohan has seemingly replace it back to each burner.

TMZ reports that Patridge and Bohan hung in Bora Bora last weekend.

And despite back to Bohan, after several other failed relationships, Patridge recently told MTV, that “It has always been my one true love.” Right … until the next guy comes!

It seems as though now Hills and all its counterfeits will not be done, Audrina loves what she can to live my “real” life from the public eye … for the most part. Rumor has it that Patridge hooked up to a new reality show proper, so it will be interesting to see how that all pans and, if it is a spin-off of her life in the hills.

Similac Recall

Similac Recall
WASHINGTON — Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories said Wednesday it is recalling millions of containers of its best-selling Similac infant formula that may be contaminated with insect parts.

The voluntary action affects up to 5 million Similac-brand powder formulas sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries. The company said the products may contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems.

The recall does not affect any liquid formulas or other Abbott-brand products.

A company spokeswoman said Abbott uncovered the insects last week in one section of a manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan.

"We immediately shut down that one area and began an investigation," said Abbott's Melissa Brotz. "We're in the process of resolving it now." Abbott manufactures Similac at several U.S. sites.

Brotz said the company has been consulting with the Food and Drug Administration, which determined there was no "immediate health risk" from the contamination.

Consumers can enter the lot number on their containers online to determine if they are subject to the recall. The products should be returned to Abbott for a full refund.

"Delivering anything less than the highest quality infant formula is unacceptable to us," said Brotz. "We will do whatever is necessary to maintain the trust of parents in the coming weeks."

The affected products were sold in plastic containers and various can sizes, including 8-ounce (227-gram), 12.4-ounce (352-gram) and 12.9-ounce (366-gram).

Katherine Schwarzenegger's new book: Just be yourself

Sponsored Links
Katherine Schwarzenegger's new book Just be yourself Katherine Schwarzenegger

Amid the silly celebrity tell-all books comes one that promises a more valuable lesson: "Rock What You've Got," by Katherine Schwarzenegger. The book, due out Tuesday, is the first by the daughter of action-star-turned- California-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. She hopes to encourage young girls to avoid an unhealthy fixation on their weight and looks.

"I want girls to read this and feel that it's OK to be themselves -- and to understand that every girl can be beautiful no matter what size and shape she is," she said in a news release about the book. "You don't have to look like you're on a billboard to feel beautiful. I really wanted to correct girls' perception of that."

I like that message, even though I cringe whenever it's delivered by those who grew up with the benefits of money, privilege and good genes. Still, there's no doubting that all kids feel pressured from peers and society -- no matter how rich or poor. The University of Southern California junior also promises to provide an inside look at her own upbringing, including her sense of awkwardness among the Kennedys -- her mother's side of the family.

"I never thought I would write a book," she said in the release. "But my fuel came from research and information on the growing number of girls who feel so much pressure to be thin -- and how young all of this is starting. My goal is to let girls know they're not alone when they're going through this and to spread the word about what young girls are going through today. Society needs to know about the kind of pressure that is put on girls. We have to change it in some way."

Rich Cronin has died of leukemia at the age of 35 Rich Cronin
The lead singer of the 1990's boy band LFO, Rich Cronin has died of leukemia at the age of 35. His band, LFO which he started, is best known for the hit, "Summer Girls" for which Cronin wrote the lyrics.

"The band split in 2002. In 2005, Cronin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. Two years later, his cancer in remission, Cronin — along with former boy banders Jeff Timmons (of 98 Degrees), Bryan Abrams (of Color Me Badd), and Chris Kirkpatrick (of ’N Sync) — starred in the VH1 reality series Mission: Man Band, about the quartet’s struggle to start up a new band," according to Music Mix.

Cronin had suffered for so long, but every one of his fans and he believed he had beaten the disease, but his remission was short lived, and so was he. It's so sad for someone so young to die, but it's sad as well for his loyal fans. He was just a nice guy, singer, and songwriter. His music made you happy, and we are sad to lose Rich Cronin. Rest in peace, Rich.

It's really hard to believe he's dead. Condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

Caroline Wozniacki
Waiting and waiting to play her first match as the No. 1-seeded woman at a Grand Slam tournament, Caroline Wozniacki passed the time by watching Rafael Nadal play his opener, reading a magazine and jogging in the gym.

When she finally set foot on court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Wozniacki played like someone in a hurry.

Seeking her first major title, 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki beat NCAA champion Chelsey Gullickson 6-1, 6-1 in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

Because of long matches earlier, this one began at 11:52 p.m. Tuesday night and ended at 12:53 a.m. Wednesday.

“Thank you for sticking around,” Wozniacki told what was left of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd afterward, “even though I know it’s been a long night.”

The University of Georgia’s Gullickson, daughter of former major league pitcher Bill Gullickson, took the first two points of the match, smacking good service returns on both and hitting a cross-court forehand winner to go up love-30. The third point was typical of the patient, make-no-mistakes Wozniacki: It lasted 22 strokes and ended when Gullickson dumped a forehand in the net.

LAS VEGAS — The Clark County coroner's office ruled Tuesday that 25-year-old professional golfer Erica Blasberg's death was a suicide.
Erica BlasbergErica Blasberg

Blasberg died May 9 at her home in Henderson, about 15 miles southeast of the Las Vegas Strip. She was found with a plastic bag secured over her head.

Henderson police said that while no foul play is suspected they have issued a misdemeanor arrest warrant for Dr. Thomas Hess on obstruction charges. Police said Hess, who discovered Blasberg's body, removed items from the scene, including a suicide note.

The contents of the note haven't been disclosed.

Hess turned himself into authorities, was booked into jail and released about 35 minutes later, after posting $637 in bail Tuesday afternoon, Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said.

David Mincavage, an assistant city attorney in Henderson, said the nonviolent misdemeanor charges against Hess carry a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months in jail.

Mincavage said he could not comment further on the case, and Paul declined to say whether additional charges were possible.

The coroner's office said Blasberg died of suicide due to asphyxia, coupled with the presence of toxic levels of prescription medication in her system, including prescription headache, cough, pain and anti-anxiety medications.

The drugs in Blasberg's system included butalbital, temazepam, alprazolam, codeine, hydrocodone, and tramadol, according to the coroner, but Nevada law doesn't permit the release of details on the amounts of medication.

Patricia Neal dies at age 84

Sponsored Links
Patricia Neal, the willowy, husky-voiced actress who won an Academy Award for 1963’s “Hud” and then survived several strokes to continue acting, died on Sunday. She was 84.

Neal had lung cancer and died surrounded by her family at her home in Edgartown, Mass., on Martha’s Vineyard.

“She faced her final illness as she had all of the many trials she endured: with indomitable grace, good humor and a great deal of her self-described stubbornness,” her family said in a statement.

Neal was already an award-winning Broadway actress when she won her Oscar for her role as a housekeeper to the Texas father (Melvyn Douglas) battling his selfish, amoral son (Paul Newman).

Less than two years later, she suffered a series of strokes in 1965 at age 39. Her struggle to once again walk and talk is regarded as epic in the annals of stroke rehabilitation. She returned to the screen to earn another Oscar nomination and three Emmy nominations.

The Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center that helps people recover from strokes and spinal cord and brain injuries is named for her in Knoxville, where she grew up.

“She never forgot us after she went to Hollywood,” said 85-year-old Bud Albers, who graduated with Neal from Knoxville High School in 1943, and still lives in the city.

Whenever she was in town, a bunch of her friends would always get together and have dinner, Albers said. She had wanted to be there next week for a golf tournament that benefits the center, he said.

“She was so courageous,” he said of her battling back from her illnesses and losing her 7-year-old daughter to measles in 1962. “She always fought back. She was very much an inspiration.”

In her 1988 autobiography, “As I Am,” she wrote, “Frequently my life has been likened to a Greek tragedy, and the actress in me cannot deny that comparison.”

Neal projected force that almost crackled on the screen. Her forte was drama, but she had a light touch that enabled her to do comedy, too.

She had the female leads in the 1949 film version of Ayn Rand’s novel “The Fountainhead,” the classic 1951 science fiction film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and Elia Kazan’s 1957 drama “A Face in the Crowd.”

She made a grand return to the screen after her strokes in 1968, winning an Oscar nomination for her performance in “The Subject Was Roses.”

In 1971, she played Olivia Walton in “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” a made-for-TV film that served as the pilot for the CBS series “The Waltons.” It brought her the first of her three Emmy nominations.

“You can’t give up,” she said in a 1999 Associated Press interview. “You sure want to, sometimes.”

In 1953, she married Roald Dahl, the British writer famed for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” ”James and the Giant Peach” and other tales for children. They had five children. They divorced in 1983 after she learned he was having an affair with her best friend and he died in 1990.

Even before her illnesses, her life often was touched by misfortune. Besides her daughter’s death, an infant son nearly died in 1960 when his carriage was struck by a taxi.

Neal also suffered a nervous breakdown, and had an ill-fated affair with Gary Cooper, who starred with her in “The Fountainhead.”

“I lived this secret life for several years. I was so ashamed,” she told The New York Times in 1964.

The strokes at first paralyzed her and impaired her speech. After recovering, she limped and had bad vision in one eye. A 1991 biopic about her travails starred Glenda Jackson as Neal.

Her family said her dedication to the rehab center and advocacy for stroke sufferers was a great source of hope for them and their families and a “constant inspiration to our family.”

In 1999, she starred in her first feature film in 10 years in the title role in Robert Altman’s “Cookie’s Fortune.”

She said at the time that movie offers had been scarce in recent years.

“I don’t quite understand it, but nobody calls me and nobody wants me. But I love to act.”Neal was born in a mining camp in Packard, Ky., the daughter of a transportation manager for the South Coal & Coke Co. After leaving Knoxville, she attended Northwestern University and then struck out for Broadway.

Her Broadway credits included “A Roomful of Roses,” ”The Miracle Worker” (as Helen Keller’s mother, Kate) and a revival of Lillian Hellman’s drama “The Children’s Hour.”

She made her screen debut in 1949’s “John Loves Mary,” that also starred Jack Carson and Ronald Reagan.

Her three Emmy nominations were all for roles in notable drama specials: Besides “The Homecoming,” they were “Tail Gunner Joe,” a 1977 drama about Sen. Joe McCarthy, and a version of the tragic World War I story “All Quiet on the Western Front.”

Among Neal’s children is Tessa Dahl, who followed in her father’s footsteps as a writer. Tessa Dahl’s daughter is the model and writer Sophie Dahl.

Friends said her sorrows gave her an inner toughness that brought new power to her screen roles.

“I don’t lie down. … I’m fightin’ all the way,” she said in 1999.

The statement from Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy Dahl and others said that the night before her death, Neal told them, “I’ve had a lovely time.”

Caroline Giuliani ARRESTED: Rudy Giuliani's Daughter Caught Shoplifting
NEW YORK — Rudy Giuliani's daughter was arrested Wednesday on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge at a beauty supplies store after she was seen on security video pocketing makeup, police said.

Caroline Giuliani, a 20-year-old Harvard University student, was seen taking five items worth more than $100 at a Sephora store in Manhattan, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.

Store managers, after calling police, said they didn't want to press charges against her, Browne said. But police arrested her on a petty larceny charge, he said.

Giuliani, wearing black pants and a red sweater and with her arms folded, exited a police precinct Wednesday evening and quickly got into an SUV with a man and a woman. She did not respond to reporters' questions.

Her father, through a spokeswoman, said the case was a personal matter and asked the media to respect her privacy.

The Manhattan district attorney's office had not decided whether to file formal charges against her, office spokeswoman Erin Duggan said. She's due in court on Aug. 31.

Caroline Giuliani is the younger of the former New York mayor's two children with ex-wife Donna Hanover, a television reporter and actress. She is believed to be estranged from her prosecutor-turned-politican father.

In 2007, when Rudy Giuliani was seeking the Republican nomination for president, Caroline Giuliani listed herself as a member of Barack Obama's Facebook group supporting his candidacy. But she left the group after an online magazine sent her an inquiry about it, and she didn't comment on the presidential race.

Rudy Giuliani lost to U.S. Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama.

The show is set to air between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Camera crews from the show filmed footage over the winter, including videos of takeoffs and landings.

The airport seems to have been selected for its unique approach and departure paths, which are similar to those of many Colorado mountain airports, said Chris Anderson, terminal manager for the Eagle County Regional Airport.

“It's a lot like any mountain airport,” Anderson said. “There's surrounding terrain that brings a little different element to flying an aircraft in and out of the airport.”

Michael Spillane, the son of  ”Westies” mobster Mickey Spillane, called 911 early Saturday morning after finding his younger brother, Robert “Bobby” Spillane lying on a NYC street corner bleeding to death.
It is unclear whether Robert’s death was an accident or if he committed suicide, but authorities say around 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, he fell from the sixth floor window of his Eighth Avenue apartment building.
His body was discovered by Michael, 46, who had just crossed the street after leaving a Starbucks coffee shop.

The manager of the Cosmic Diner, who witnessed the incident, told reporters that “Michael was coming from Starbucks this morning and as he crossed the street he saw Robert lying there.”
Robert, 45, was the youngest of Mickey Spillane’s three children. He had played bit parts on hit TV shows such as, “NYPD Blue”, “Law and Order” and “Rescue Me”, and wrote an off-Broadway play about cross-dressing gangsters.

Mickey Spillane was known as the “last gentleman gangster.”  The elder Spillane ran the rackets for the “Westies” Irish gang for decades before he was gunned down in 1977 when Robert was 12-years-old.

People are debating about the new Wonder Woman outfit and character design. The popular DC character is getting a makeover after years of wearing and looking the same, and it will appear changed for the first time on Wonder Woman #600!

The costume redesign was in charge of DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee and the new costume marks the beginning of a new team in charge of bringing the newWonder Woman on comic books.

The story of the super heroin has also changed and now she lives in an urban setting. According to Geeks of Doom:

“The direction for the book puts Wonder Woman in a modern era where her original origin story has been altered. The world she would have known is now destroyed and her Amazon race is in danger of extinction.Wonder Woman’s world is now in an urban setting where she knows little about her previous life and she will have to fight to survive.”

There are mixed opinions on the costume of the new Wonder Woman, some people say this new costume and look does not give the same image as the original wonder Woman what do you think?

Joel Zumaya’s painful right arm injury

Sponsored Links
MINNEAPOLIS — Reliever Joel Zumaya’s painful right arm injury marred the Detroit Tiger’s move into first place, after the Tigers used four first-inning runs against Francisco Liriano to beat the Minnesota Twins 7-5 on Monday night.

Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera hit two-run doubles in the first off Liriano, who surrendered a season-high six runs in six-plus innings while the Tigers passed the Twins for a half-game lead in the AL Central.

That took the background to Zumaya’s health, though, when the hard-throwing right-hander squirmed and winced around on the mound in obvious pain after throwing a pitch with one out in the eighth inning.

Zumaya, who missed large portions of the last two seasons because of shoulder problems, was in so much discomfort his right thumb was shaking while the trainer checked him out.

Manager Jim Leyland said Zumaya will have an MRI exam Tuesday morning. He said it is an elbow injury but declined to speculate further.

"It doesn't look good," Leyland said. "It breaks your heart."

Zumaya, who was wearing a sling on his right arm in the clubhouse, declined to comment through a team spokesman.

Tigers catcher Gerald Laird said he heard a noise “just like a little pop” after Zumaya released the ball and was hesitant to go to the mound, fearing the worst.

Jose Valverde came in and got five straight outs for his 18th straight save, making a winner of Jeremy Bonderman (4-5) and moving the Tigers into first place for the first time since May 20. They were tied then with the sputtering Twins, who have led the division this season for all but a handful of days.

Minnesota fell to 10-15 in June, despite a home run and an RBI triple — his first three-base hit in more than six years — by Jim Thome. The Twins hit into three double plays and lead the majors with 88.

Liriano (6-6) lost his third straight start, the latest Twins starter to fail to stop the slide. Other than Carl Pavano, their rotation is reeling.

Just like on June 17, when Colorado scored three times in the first inning against Liriano and cruised to a victory behind ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the Twins couldn’t fully recover from an early deficit.

Laura Howard : I just know Tim didn't want it to end up this way

Tim and Laura Howard (athletewives.com)
Laura Howard, US goaltender Tim Howard's wife, wasn't in South Africa cheering on her hubby in the World Cup (that's a long way to go with 2 little ones), so she caught all the action from Tennessee, where the family lives during the summer. And though she said she's "disappointed" the team lost today against Ghana, she's undoubtedly glad to have her husband back.

"I'm disappointed," she said (via AP). "I just know Tim didn't want it to end up this way. But I do know two little children that will be very excited to see him. He will be back Monday."
Laura even videotaped the scene at the Flying Saucer as the game went on in Cordova, Tennessee. "He'd be blown away to know that this was the type of reception they got," she said.

Even though the guys are coming home without a win, she said the experience has been great for the whole family.“It’s been great,” she said. “I have gotten calls from lots of friends that I haven’t heard from in a long time and we have a lot of family in the area. It’s been really amazing. I even heard Graceland was lit up in red, white, and blue.”

The Howard family lives in Tennessee for the summer, and thanks to World Cup fame, the soccer family might not be able to go unrecognized anymore. "Not anymore!,” Laura said. “I’m originally from here so that’s a big reason we chose to live here, but (Tim) loves to put on flip-flops and go to the gas station. But I don’t think he’s going to be able to do that anymore.”
